in//between
a process led design
The force of gravity, head, and hammered surface created a strange reddish veil where the surface grooves became blackened, framed by a ring of exposed and reflective metal. It reminded me of a dragon!
Of course, again, I had to continue onwards, and I arrived at my final destination: a polished hammered bead. I wanted to go back to the beginning, however, and protract the journey and give heed to all the steps.
How far could I break down the capture the process?
How many journeys within a journey could I discover?
In essence: how many new designs could emerge from the processes themselves - a new way to design the unexpected, the “in betweens”?
A hand-hammered copper bead had always been a singular destination which I often visited. The journey itself always moved efficiently through every step, the sceneries in between, to reach as well-crafted of an artifact as possible.
My last trip was different. As I ventured through the thicket of cold steel, malleable copper, and flame, a matted half-dome shell with sputters of brightly burnished flecks from the first strikes of the hammer caught my attention. As I admired the uneven scorched surface, I wanted to stop here.
Of course I had to continue forward, hestitatingly hammering the evening out the edges so I could join to the two halves of the bead. Secured by the light tension of a pair of tweezers, flux dripped towards the bottom of the bead, foaming and encrusting the copper as it was heated, ready to be soldered.
